Officer Fred Thornton, 50 years old was killed on February 25, 2011 as a result of an explosion.

Officer Thornton, the longest tenured CMPD SWAT Officer had participated in a high-risk search warrant and afterwards was rendering a stun grenade safe when it exploded.

Officer Thornton, a 28 year veteran of the Charlotte-Mecklenburg Police Department is survived by his Wife Linda and children Patrick, Phillip, Glenna and Jo Beth.
