While working in uniform at an off-duty security job at a convenience
store on the night of June 30, 1982, Officer Coleman was fatally shot in the forehead by a
subject whom he had earlier ejected from the store for rowdiness. The 31 year-old officer
never regained consciousness and died during the early morning hours of July 1, at
Charlotte Memorial Hospital, a veteran of 18 months on the force. Over 2,000 mourners
attended the funeral for the slain officer, who was born in Washington, D.C. City
officials established a joint memorial fund to benefit the children of the two officers,
Coleman and Cannon, who were slain in less than a year of each other. Then Mayor Eddie
Knox proclaimed the week of August 4-11 as the Coleman/Cannon Give Life Week, and many
fund-raising events were held. |
