baker.jpg (15352 bytes) Detective C. H. Baker suffered a fractured skull in an auto collision near Roanoke Rapids on April 7, 1941, and succumbed to his injuries on Saturday morning, April 12, in a hospital there.  Sheriff S. M. Gaddy of Wadesboro, who was in the car Detective Baker was driving, was listed in critical condition at the same hospital.   The two law officers were transporting two prisoners back to Charlotte at the time of the fatal crash.  A native of Kershaw, South Carolina, Detective Baker became a member of the Charlotte Police Department on November 18, 1930, having previously been employed with Foremost Dairies.  He served as a patrolman until August, 1931, when he was promoted to the motor patrol.  He was promoted again in July, 1935, to the Detective Division, where he was assigned at the time of his death at age 36.
